Previous post I wrote a introduction of global warming and suggestion on how to prevent global warming. On Friday lecture, I attended a lecture there were three lecturer presented topics related to global warming. After this impressive lecture, I obtained more information about global warming.
The first speaker on the stage was Prof. Andrew Palmer. He focused on reduction of carbon dioxide and storage of carbon dioxide. In order to mitigate the effect of global warming, the key issue is to reduce the percentage of carbon dioxide contained in our earth and different nations must work together to solve this problem. In his speech, he showed us two possible solutions towards global warming, one was to sent millions of small lenses to space to reflect the radiation of sun light, this action can reduce the heat reach our earth, but it will be a big project and spent plenty of money. Another possible plan was to store carbon dioxide under the sea by using the pressure difference in the ocean; Prof. Andrew elaborated this plan with a detailed picture. After that he also presented some charts explaining the changing of climate from the past to current days.
After Prof. Andrew Palmer, Dr Benjamin K. Sovacool presented the topic on using Science and Technology System (STS) to address energy (and Technological) problems. He mentioned two case studies which were renewable power and electrical vehicles. The first case study talked about factors, including market failures and barriers, political regulatory. The second case study explored the reasons on why electrical vehicle displaced by gasoline vehicle.
Lastly, Professor Rajasekhar Bala presented an overview in assessment and mitigation of climate changes. A brief introduction was given on the greenhouse effect and enhanced greenhouse effect. A point was the same as Prof. Andrew Palmer presented, he also mentioned the storage of carbon dioxide.
In conclusion, from this lecture I understood the cause of global warming, the possible solution of global warming, the difficulties of mitigation of global warming.
